April’s Journey
Meet Studio student April Auker. Over the past few years, April has dealt with several deaths in her family, two injured knees, and a haunting feeling of embarrassment about her weight gain. In September, April contacted The Studio seeking a place she could feel comfortable and safe to help her on her weight loss journey.
She has agreed to attend EVERY class on The Studio’s schedule and let us document her journey as she prepares for her 50th birthday celebration! We hope this serves as inspiration as well as an invitation to those who may be battleing the same struggles.

For her first class she chose one of the most challenging….Kettlebell training with Rod Hutton. Why on Earth did she choose one of the hardest for her first class? We have no idea! But she did great and now she is hooked!
Next she chose Flab-Fighters, a 45 minute class that uses light hand weights and body weight to tone and sculpt.
After her first week at The Studio, April was down 2 pounds – a perfectly healthy rate of loss with proper diet and exercise! She keeps tabs on her calorie intake everyday using My Fitness Pal, a free, online calorie and exercise tracker and her goal is to mix and match 3 classes a week at The Studio.
April confesses that she was a little nervous about this next format. Like most first-timers, her image of Power Pilates was something similar to bending like a pretzel. Not so! This is a great “core focused” workout that challenges you to stabilize and isolate key muscles that are so important to your overall strength. April admits she was pleasantly surprised by how challenging this low-impact workout can be.
It took a while for April to work up the courage to try Zumba. A Latin-based dance class can sound a little intimidating for the “rhythmically-challenged”. At The Studio, we dim the lights and pump up the music so there really is no wrong way to burn calories! JUST MOVE!
At the close of her third week at The Studio, April is down 7lbs and going strong!
Here is the week 9 check-in with April. Even with persistent knee problems, scheduling issues and the Thanksgiving holiday, she was able to drop 16 pounds! Check out the difference in that pink shirt!
Check back soon for more on April’s journey and like us on Facebook to cheer her on! Or better yet…come join her in a class!
